Boiler and Furnace Fire Damage Prevention

1/18/2022 (Permalink)

SERVPRO of Kennett Square/Oxford provides fire restoration services in our Chester County area.  We often demolish, clean and restore properties after fire damage has occurred due to situations such as improper heating equipment.  Boilers and furnaces often malfunction and cause issues that can lead to substantial fire damage.  It is important to inspect and maintain your heating systems on a regular basis.  A certified professional is recommended in order to do so.  However, there are issues you can look for on your own in order to prevent a potential fire damage event.

Check for Signs of Oil Leaks

Oil drips or leaks indicate that oil is not burning properly in the system.  Black soot on the surfaces of your home can also mean that the oil has begun to slowly exit the burner or furnace improperly.

Be Aware of Strange Odors or Noises

An odd odor can mean that the combustion gases inside the chamber are not exiting the system properly.  Oil begins to build up and can then potentially burst out of the system as the oil collection grows, leading to a puffback.

Noises such as a bang or puffing sound signify a heater problem and that the oil isn’t fully burning as well.

Clean the System

Clean areas of the boiler or furnace including the heat exchanger, fan and filters.  This will keep the system clear of dirt and dust that can collect and cause a future problem.  Regularly vacuum in order to keep dust out of the system.  Be sure to turn the furnace off, allowing time for it to cool down before cleaning.

Inspect and Replace Components as Needed

Replace the oil nozzle and air filters on an as needed basis.  Air filters should be changed 1-2 times per year.  You should also ensure that there are no clogs or cracks in the system including in your chimney.

Check for Other Issues

If the burner fails to stay on, the chamber may be out of oil or have a clog.  Should an oil nozzle be clogged or damaged, the oil will not burn completely and collect inside the system.  The unburned oil may lead to a puffback.

Should you have issues with your furnace or boiler this winter, we recommend that you hire a professional to perform the proper maintenance procedures for the system.  Should your heating equipment malfunction, SERVPRO of Kennett Square/Oxford can assist with your fire damage needs.  We provide complete fire restoration services including smoke and soot removal and odor deodorization techniques in order to help restore your Chester County home from unwanted pollutants.
